![]() The issue for me with the ABS has always been how awful it is at actually calling balls and strikes. It might be a good pitch, but if it quite literally isn't on the plate, it should be a ball. What became annoying was umpires rewarding pitchers by giving them pitches off the plate. I could tell you when a pitch was a strike, and I could tell when a pitch was 2 inches off the plate. I stepped into the batter’s box thousands of times over the course of my career. If the ball touches a corner, it’s a strike. Like it or not, an automatic strike zone is coming to Major League Baseball eventually. I understand this is taking the human element out of the game, but it seems like more and more umpires are letting their egos become part of the game, and that just can’t happen.Īt the end of the day, there is a home plate. With this ABS implementation, the league states, "It will be used to assist home plate umpires in calling balls and strikes." That makes it seem that the system will not be the end-all, be-all when it comes to what is a ball and what is a strike. In the Atlantic League, the automatic strike zone was the definitive voice in determining balls and strikes. There will still be an umpire standing behind home plate. ![]() Now it is time to bring it to the minor leagues. The automatic ball/strike system (ABS) has been implemented in the Atlantic League, an independent professional baseball league, and tested in the Arizona Fall League. I got to experience this rule when I played in the minor leagues, and I thought it worked pretty smoothly. That said, pitching changes can take forever, and some pitchers take way too long between pitches. I have no problem, as I stated earlier, with baseball games taking a while. More potential regulations could be added. The timers will be used between innings to make sure the first pitch of each inning is thrown by a certain time, between pitches and during pitching changes. With this change, there will be one timer in the outfield and two behind home plate between the dugouts. My thoughts: I don’t love this rule and don’t see it making its way to the big leagues.įollowing successful pace-of-play rule changes in the Florida State League (high-A) in 2019, the league is continuing to experiment. With this change, the process of picking off will take a lot longer, leading to larger leads off of bases and more stolen base attempts. Essentially, the pitcher can jump and turn at the same time and quickly get the runner scurrying back to the base. In the event that a pitcher fails to comply, the penalty will be a balk.Ĭurrently, when a pitcher is on the mound, he doesn't have to step off the rubber before attempting to pick off a batter. With this rule, pitchers are required to disengage from the rubber on the mound prior to throwing to any base. When a defense sees that a batter hits the ball in one area 90% of the time, why shouldn't they be allowed to put extra defenders there? If a pitcher is allowed to look at a scouting report and see that I can’t hit a slider (which I couldn’t), that pitcher will throw me 90% sliders (which they did). You get eight defenders in the field, and their one and only job is to make sure they defend the baseball so that the other team doesn’t score runs. Now, I wouldn’t necessarily say I love the shift, but I also don’t hate it. Depending on how that goes, the rule could also make it mandatory to have two players on each side of second base. To start, it states that the defensive team must have four players in the infield, and each must have both feet in the dirt within the outer boundary of the infield. This one has been talked about for the past few years: the defensive shifts rule. I think we could see some cool things if this rule ends up sticking. I also like this because I think it allows runners more ways to get creative when diving into bases. If this rule results in more stolen base attempts and, more importantly, fewer injuries, count me in. It won’t make the biggest difference in terms of infield singles and stolen bases, but with the base 3 inches closer to the runner, we will see more of both. ![]() My thoughts: This rule makes complete sense to me. Injuries aside, it is expected that larger bases will result in a few more infield hits and stolen bases. When running full-speed down the line to first base, there isn’t always a lot of room for the runner to touch the base with the first baseman’s foot right there on the edge. This is first and foremost to reduce injuries and collisions. ![]() ![]() ![]() Weird West: Dark Fantasy reimagining of the Wild West where lawmen and gunslingers share the frontier with fantastical creatures, each playing with their own rules and their own peculiar motives. ![]() Form a posse or venture forth alone into an otherworldly confines of the Weird West and make each legend your own. Incredibly useful against opponents with guns, but unsurprisingly little help against more supernatural opponents. Spirit Ward: Creates a shield that absorbs projectiles and converts them to health for 8 seconds. The teleport range isn’t the best, but Shift’s short cooldown time means it can be spammed easily. The stun incapacitates weaker enemies long enough for you to kill them with a melee weapon. Can be used to quickly attack or escape enemies. Shift: Teleport 8 meters, stunning enemies afterwards. Good for shocking opponents that get to close, especially if you’re attacking with a melee weapon. Summon Wisps: Summons 3 lightning wisps which will home in on nearby enemies and detonate on impact. Best paired with a shotgun or melee weapon. The shocked effect lasts for a while, giving breathing room during close-quarter encounters. Unlike other class abilities, this is locked until late in the Protector’s journey. Thunderbird Strike: Summon a lightning bolt that strikes at your position. Can also be used to move between cover or chase enemies down with a melee weapon. Perfect for stealth, since you can run around freely without making noise. Surefooted: Move quietly and 25% faster for 10 seconds. Excellent for crowd control, with additional damage potential if you launch the tornado into fire or poison. Western Wind: Creates a tornado that moves forward, launching enemies and objects. Makes for a good distraction, though the bear’s AI often causes it to stand around or get stuck on objects. Protector Class AbilitiesĬousin Bear: Summons a spectral bear that fights with you for 15 seconds. Can also eat dead enemies to heal, but usually not worth it due to the long animation. Shapeshift: Unlocked from the start of the Devotee’s journey, allowing you to briefly turn into a werewolf. Worth taking if you want to save on healing items, or have allies that like to stand in the way of explosions. This heals for a lot over the entire duration, but its area of effect is incredibly small. Inun’s Healing: Creates a healing circle for 10 seconds that slowly regenerates the HP of all that enter it. Stuff like: "Macintosh HD:Users:carol:Desktop:Links:204983 SS Pkt Tees.tif"Īt this point, I speculate that unix paths work fine when they can be converted to colon paths by prefixing "Macintosh HD:" and changing the slashes to colons. Please note that for the desktop folder, etc, the colon path is different - it needs your hard drive name in it. So, for your USB drive, the colon path should be: "USB_External:Archives:2s:204983:Links:204983 SS Pkt Tees.tif". ![]() The colon path starts with the name of the drive and then directory names with sepeators. Generally speaking they are quite similar. InDesign wants the colon path in the Spreadsheet according to the documentation, but appears to be giving you the unix path, and maybe that sometimes works. On a Mac, there are (at least) 2 kinds of paths: the colon path and the unix (slashes) path. What's the exact path you are using in the spreadsheet? Wow, I'm a little bit late to the party, but it looks to me like we're missing some information here. ![]() This obviously won't be good for me if I can't get Data Merge to work by pulling images from various folders. I tried saving the text file and the ID file in the same folder as the links folder, but the only thing that worked was to have the links all out in the same level as the ID and text, rather than being in a links folder. I tried swapping out the colons, but no joy. I also noticed that in the help files, the PC example used the backslashes as separators, and the Mac example used colons. Volumes/Shared Folder/ClientFolder/AdDate//Links/204983 SS Pkt Tees.tif On a removable USB drive, a few folders in: Users/carol/Desktop/Links/204983 SS Pkt Tees.tif Here is what the paths look like when copied from the links manager: I'm using an iMac with 10.6.6, and I haven't tried on the other iMacs that run 10.5.8. So, at this point, the only problem is that the path that I copy from the links manager returns an error when the images are on the USB drive, while the same method works if the image is on the HD. The hope is to pick SKUs from a database, assemble them by page into tab-delimited text files, and use Data Merge to bring each ad into a text frame, with any associated product image or logos. I'm looking to introduce Data Merge into the mix so that we can get a whole page's worth of ads from a data sheet, rather than looking up each ad by SKU and copy/pasting from the archive. ![]() ![]() Images are located in 11 folders, depending on the SKU of the product in the ad. It is from the archives that the images for this job (a 12-24 page ad sheet that publishes every two weeks) will be taken. It would probably make sense to always have the USB drive hooked up to the same machine, but it would be more flexible if it could be carried to any machine, should the main one be tied up by something else. There is a PC server, but for some reason, they use an external USB drive for archiving. All machines are supposed to go up to 10.6 at some point, but I'm not the administrator, so I can only ask for any software updating-I can't do it myself. The office has several workstations-all Macs with some form of 10.5, but one (the one I use) that has some form of 10.6 (sorry that I can't be more specific now, but I'm at home). ![]() ![]() ![]() Her shift from wide-eyed adventurer to full-fledged killer makes sense, and that's precisely why it's so uncomfortable. And when she finally cracks halfway through the adventure, shifting from someone fighting to defend herself to a person clearly on the offensive, you understand that, too, because everyone has a breaking point. Killing eventually becomes commonplace for Lara, and though it's hard to accept how quickly she adjusts to this bloody lifestyle, her anxious cries during battle and exhausted collapses afterward make you see the scared person hiding beneath the surface. You understand her unwillingness to believe the terrible events that have transpired, and feel as squeamish as she does when she's forced to kill an attacker. She starts out as a strong-headed recent graduate determined to scout unexplored lands in search of this lost civilization, but quickly realizes the terrible predicament she's in when things go awry. It's unfortunate how poor so much of the exposition is, because Lara herself is well defined. This tired cast is thrust into a story filled with equally tired tropes, so you rarely care about the overarching events. Their names don't matter, because with such little development of their personalities, you quickly forget who they were as soon as they're offscreen. There's the scientifically minded man who wears glasses and shirts with geeky puns, the muscled fisherman who defies his impressive physique by repeatedly showing just how sensitive he is, and a stoic mercenary who's also a long-term mentor to Lara. Her companions encompass typical archetypes that are at once recognizable and forgettable. Lara Croft is a junior member of a small crew searching for the remains of a lost kingdom that mysteriously vanished. It's not the most novel functionality, but at least it works. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions support commands, so just saying "map" or "pistol" immediately does what you'd expect. Unless, that is, you love voice communication. Have you ever wanted Lara to dress like a 1930s explorer? Now's your chance! None of these additions are all that interesting, so if you've already played through Tomb Raider on an older console, there's little incentive to jump in again. One new tomb lets you flex your puzzle-solving muscle, and a variety of outfits give you more stylistic flexibility. Single player hasn't been ignored, either. There are a host of new multiplayer maps to gun down your friends (or enemies) in, weapons pulled straight from Hitman: Absolution, and a handful of new characters to play as. Just about all of the downloadable content from the 2013 release is now located right on the disc. The Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider is a lot like Lara Croft's excellent adventure from last year, only with enhanced visuals and extra features. Such endeavors are so fantastical that her story of emotional growth is often overshadowed by the wildly unrealistic events, but the overwhelming beauty of the island is so gripping, and the exploration so expertly designed, that you become invested in Lara Croft's incredible journey. Her life is one of bloodshed and misery, strength peppered with pain, and as she overcomes every crushing setback, she learns what kind of person she truly is. Excitement defines the actions of an adventurous archeologist, no matter how reluctant you might be to bear arms, and you see this chaotic lifestyle through the eyes of perpetual survivor Lara Croft. Sure, in-depth knowledge of deceased civilizations is important, but much less so than mastery of a deadly bow or a knack for a quick recovery after a bloody fight. Examining ancient relics is just one small aspect of an archeologist's job. ![]() ![]() ![]() cache/) When you open TinyUmbrella, it should.
